You picked a beautiful corner of the world to spend your summer — but if you've been here a few days, you've figured out that the Idaho sun hits differently at altitude. The good news: cold, clear water is never far away.

Between mountain lakes, glacially fed rivers, and a couple of spots inside Grand Teton National Park, there are enough options to turn "too hot" into your excuse for a great afternoon.

��️ Mountain Lakes in Teton Valley

Treasure Lake is our top pick for an easy mountain lake day. It's tucked into Teton Canyon near the old Boy Scout Camp — a short, well-marked walk through the trees brings you down to a beautiful alpine lake that feels like a reward before you've even broken a sweat. The water is cold and clear, the setting is stunning, and it's accessible enough that you don't need a full hiking kit to enjoy it. Bring a towel, a lunch, and plan to stay a while.

Packsaddle Lake is a step up in commitment — about 40 minutes out, with the last stretch on a rough forest road that earns its reputation. But if you don't mind the drive, you're rewarded with a true alpine lake that sees fewer people and feels genuinely remote. Worth it for the adventurous crowd.

�� The Teton River

The Teton River winds through the valley floor and offers several easy-access spots that are perfect for cooling off without committing to a hike.

Fox Creek East Boat Ramp is one of the better-known pullouts — the water moves slower here, making it ideal for jumping in, wading around, and setting up a riverside picnic. Families with kids especially love it.

Bates Bridge and Big Eddy , both near Driggs, are local favorites with small sandy areas where you can spread out, get your feet in the water, and watch the afternoon go by. These aren't dramatic swimming holes — they're the kind of laid-back river spots where locals go to decompress. Low effort, high reward.

If you're up for something more active, the Teton River is also a popular float for tubes and packrafts in summer. Check with local outfitters for current water levels and access points.

��️ Grand Teton National Park

If you're making the drive over the pass, the park has two swimming spots that are genuinely hard to beat.

String Lake is our favorite. The water is shallow close to shore, impossibly clear, and warm enough (by mountain lake standards) to actually swim in. It's a great paddleboard spot too, if you have a board. The scenery — Teewinot framing the far end — makes it feel like you're swimming inside a postcard. Plan to arrive early on summer weekends; the parking lot fills up.

Leigh Lake is just a short walk farther down the same trail. It's bigger, deeper, and a little less crowded than String. Spend the morning at String, walk to Leigh for the afternoon — it's an easy all-day itinerary that doesn't require much planning.

Jenny Lake is worth mentioning: it's iconic, and plenty of people swim there. Just know it draws crowds proportional to its fame. If solitude matters, String and Leigh are better choices.

�� Pools (If You Want Something Easy)

No hike required options:

Grand Targhee Resort offers day passes to their outdoor pool. It's the most convenient option if you're already on the mountain or don't want to drive anywhere.

Teton Valley Campground also offers pool access to day visitors. A good call for families with young kids who want guaranteed swimming without the trailhead logistics.

A Few Practical Notes

The water is cold. Even in July and August, these are mountain lakes and snowmelt rivers. You'll want to ease in, and you'll feel amazing afterward.
Go early or late. The best river spots fill up on hot weekend afternoons. Arriving before 10am or after 4pm gets you more elbow room.
String Lake parking: The String Lake trailhead lot is small. If it's full when you arrive, drive a few minutes to the Leigh Lake trailhead — same trail system, often more parking.
Bring water shoes. River access points and rocky lake shores are a lot more comfortable with something on your feet.
After a hot afternoon: Stop in Victor or Driggs on the way home. A cold beer at Grand Teton Brewing or a scoop from one of the local spots in Driggs is the perfect ending to a river day.

Most visitors to this corner of Idaho make the same mistake: they cross back over Teton Pass and eat in Jackson Hole. Totally understandable — Jackson has the name recognition, the neon signs, the stacked restaurant rows. It also has the prices, the crowds, and the kind of food that exists to feed tourists rather than to be any good.

The ones who figure it out — and they always come back — stay on the Idaho side when it's time to eat. You'll have to follow your craving at the time, but you can't go wrong with any of these places.

☕ Coffee First

Rise Coffee House in Driggs is the locals' coffee shop — a quaint yard, great sun, and breakfast sliders worth making a detour for. Wydaho Roasters , also in Driggs, is the newer spot: more space, great coffee, always lively. If you're in Victor, Alpine Air Coffee Cafe & Roastery is doing responsible sourcing and small-batch roasting the right way — their beans are what you'll find stocked in Teton Homestead homes.

�� Breakfast

Provisions in Driggs is the go-to breakfast spot. Cozy atmosphere, excellent food, local favorite for a reason — the kind of place where you recognize faces at the counter by day two.

In Victor, Butter Cafe is where we send guests first. Great menu, outdoor seating in summer, and the right vibe for a slow morning before a full day outside.

For something further north, Badger Creek Cafe in Tetonia is a true western mountain town breakfast. Humble atmosphere, incredible food. The kind of place you could easily drive past and regret it.

�� Lunch

The Royal Wolf in downtown Driggs is a local bar and grill in the truest sense — plenty of patio seating, great lunch fare, and a menu that has no business being as good as it is. The buffalo burger is the move. The bread comes from 460 Bread, a local bakery baking fresh in Driggs daily. The oyster mushroom tacos use blue oysters from Morning Dew Mushrooms, a farm a few miles north in Tetonia. That level of local sourcing in a bar setting tells you everything you need to know about the food culture in this valley.

Figgie's Deli in Driggs is the quick-lunch answer — fantastic sandwiches and soups, perfect for grabbing something easy before heading back outside.

Forage Bistro & Lounge is more upscale but excellent for a nicer lunch or an early afternoon cocktail with locally inspired food. It's located at our charming little airport on Warbird Lane, where you can also wander through a fascinating warbirds museum while you're at it.

Up on the mountain, Powder Cache at Grand Targhee Resort is the move if you're already on the hill. Good food, unbeatable views. Most locals drive back down to Driggs for dinner — but lunch up top with those Teton views is hard to argue with.

Forage Bistro & Lounge is the best sit-down dinner in the valley. Chef-driven plates, serious craft cocktails, a room that feels designed rather than thrown together. This is where valley people go for birthdays and anniversaries, or post-epic-ski-day dinners when price is secondary to quality. Call ahead on weekend evenings: 208.354.2858.

Teton Thai (Driggs) and Chiang Mai Thai Kitchen (Victor) cover the Thai craving from both ends of the valley. Chiang Mai is Northern Thai at its absolute best — don't miss the Khao Soi. Teton Valley somehow supports two excellent Thai restaurants, and both earn it.

King Sushi in Driggs is the one that surprises everyone. Yes — world-class sushi in Idaho, with fresh fish flown in every week. Our move: let the server surprise you with off-menu creations. It's become our go-to for special occasions like anniversaries.

Tatanka Tavern serves artisan wood-fired pizza on the third floor of a downtown Driggs building — rooftop views of the Tetons included. Exactly what you want after a long day on the trail.

Get Baked in Driggs is the best take-and-bake pizza in town. Every Friday night, my family and I grab one on the way home from our adventures and eat it at the house. Pick it up while you're coming back from wherever the day took you — it's the perfect end to a Teton Valley Friday.

Maison in Driggs is one of the newer favorites and a different vibe entirely: amazing wine, small plates, gourmet bites, super cozy atmosphere in a converted 1912 house. Their summer patio is especially great. Perfect for a lighter dinner or an afternoon glass of wine when you just want to sit somewhere nice and not rush.

Knotty Pine Supper Club in Victor is a classic. Good BBQ, good fare, a unique cabin-like setting that feels like it's been here forever because it has. In summer, eat outside and share stories from the day.

Big Hole BBQ in Victor is a weekly favorite for us. Don't let the name fool you into only ordering BBQ — the full menu is worth exploring.

The valley punches well above its weight here. Grand Teton Brewing in Victor is the anchor — join the locals on the lawn on a summer evening with burgers from the food truck. It doesn't get more Teton Valley than that. Citizen 33 in Driggs has the most complete food menu of the bunch. Guidepost Brewing in Victor is the newest and growing fast. Highpoint Cider in Victor is the spot for cider lovers — bring games, soak up the atmosphere. Refuge Taphouse in Victor is the craft beer and wine bar: outdoor seating, BYOF, low-key and great.

A Few Practical Notes

Reservations: King Sushi and Forage is the only places where a reservation genuinely matters on busy weekends. Everywhere else is walk-in — just go early if your group is large.
Shoulder season hours: Late spring and fall, things contract. A quick call before driving anywhere on a weeknight in October or May saves a wasted trip.
Sunday and Monday nights: Dining options thin out noticeably. Stock the kitchen before Sunday evening if you want to avoid the scramble.

The valley is small enough that you'll recognize faces at the bar by night two. Eat where the locals eat, and the rest of the vacation starts to feel a lot less like a trip and a lot more like a place you actually know.

Hidden Gem Trails on the West Side of the Tetons (Most Tourists Never Find These)

Five lesser-known trails on the Idaho side of the Tetons — same mountains, a fraction of the crowds, and one view that inspired Thomas Moran's most famous painting.

In the summer of 1872, painter Thomas Moran stood on the wind-scoured plateau of Table Mountain — on the Idaho side of the Tetons — and made a series of sketches that would become one of the most famous images in American landscape painting. His Grand Teton shows the mountain as he saw it from the west: a vertical wall of granite rising 7,000 feet from the valley floor, impossibly steep, lit in amber light.

That view is still there. You can stand in almost the same place Moran stood 150 years ago. The difference is that today, while thousands crowd the parking lots at Jenny Lake seven miles away, you'll likely share the Table Mountain summit with fewer than a dozen others.

This is the fundamental fact about the west side of the Tetons: it is one of the most spectacular landscapes in North America, and almost nobody goes there.

The east face — Grand Teton National Park, accessible from Jackson — gets around 3.5 million visitors a year. Paved trails. Timed entry parking. Shuttle buses every 15 minutes. The west side — the Idaho face, managed by Caribou-Targhee National Forest and the Jedidiah Smith Wilderness — gets a fraction of that traffic. Vault toilets and a bulletin board. Trails maintained on a schedule that leaves them raw and honest.

If you're staying in Teton Valley and want to actually see the mountains rather than the parking situation, this is where you go.

Before You Hit the Trail

Land management. These trails are on Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Jedidiah Smith Wilderness land — not NPS. No entry fee, no timed-entry reservation system. Overnight camping requires a free wilderness permit, self-issued at the trailhead. Confirm conditions with the Teton Basin Ranger District at (208) 354-2312.
Season. Teton Canyon (Table Mountain, Alaska Basin) typically opens for day hiking by early to mid-July. Darby Canyon Wind Cave often by late June. South Leigh Canyon by mid-June. Always call the ranger district before you go — conditions change weekly. The Caribou-Targhee National Forest posts updates online.
Bears. Grizzly bears are well-established throughout this wilderness. Carry bear spray on the hip — not in the pack — where you can draw it in two seconds. Make noise near running water.
Navigation. No cell service in most of these canyons. Download offline maps on Gaia GPS before leaving the house — not when you get to the trailhead.
Parking. The Teton Canyon trailhead holds roughly 25 cars and fills by 8 AM on summer Saturdays. Arrive by 7 AM or camp at Teton Canyon Campground the night before.

1. Table Mountain — Stand Where Thomas Moran Stood

The trail begins gently. For the first three miles you're following the floor of Teton Canyon along North Fork Teton Creek — a wide, glacier-carved valley with walls rising steeply on both sides. Pikas call from talus slopes above. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in midsummer. You're not yet climbing and it already feels like you're somewhere important.

At mile 3, the trail forks. Left goes south toward Alaska Basin. Right — the North Fork trail — is yours. This is where the work begins.

The climbing is sustained for the next two miles, switchbacking through upper spruce and subalpine fir, the trees growing shorter and more wind-bent as you gain altitude. A false summit appears around 10,200 feet, convincing enough that some hikers turn back believing they've hit the top. Keep going.

The maintained trail eventually ends and you're navigating talus by cairns. Then you step onto the plateau and the world opens up.

The summit is a nearly flat, half-mile-wide platform at 11,106 feet on the Idaho-Wyoming state line. Teton Valley stretches below in farmland and river bends. And directly across — 13,775 feet of granite cliff — the face of the Grand Teton fills the sky at a distance that makes it look almost close enough to touch. The Cathedral Group, Mount Owen, Teewinot, the full sweep of it. This is what Moran saw. You're standing in one of the most historically significant viewpoints in American landscape art.

�� What most people miss: The plateau is large enough to explore on foot. The southeast corner gives a different angle on Buck Mountain. Bring binoculars — on clear mornings, you can watch climbers on the Grand's east face.

2. Darby Canyon Wind Cave — A Geological Phenomenon Most Visitors Drive Past

The wind cave at the end of Darby Canyon is a karst feature — carved by water through limestone in the canyon's upper cliffs. The physics are straightforward: the cave connects underground to a large reservoir of cold air at higher elevation. In summer, the pressure differential causes it to exhale cold air outward. In winter, the process reverses and the cave breathes warm air out.

Standing at the cave entrance in August, the effect is startling. You've just climbed 1,600 feet in the summer heat. You step up to the opening in the cliff face and feel a steady 30-degree-cooler wind pushing back at you. The harder you worked to get there, the more remarkable it feels.

But there are actually two caves, and most visitors only find one.

The lower cave — easy to access, the one everyone photographs — is the wind cave proper. A hundred feet directly above it, reached by a short scramble on loose rock, is the ice cave. Inside, even in late July, ice formations persist on the walls and floor. Temperature near freezing. Requires a headlamp. In the way of genuine geological oddities, it's wonderful.

The trail itself earns its keep. It follows Darby Creek through a narrowing canyon, passing a multi-tiered waterfall (best in June and early July) before the limestone walls close in. Unlike the Teton Canyon trails, dogs are welcome here, which explains the local following.

�� What most people miss: The ice cave, 100 feet above the main entrance on loose rock — bring a headlamp and watch your step. Ice formations persist well into summer, and the experience of descending from July heat into a near-freezing cave is something you'll describe to people for years.

3. Alaska Basin — The Crown Jewel of the Idaho Wilderness

The Teton Crest Trail — the famous 35-mile ridgeline route — is accessed primarily from Grand Teton National Park. What most hikers don't know: some of the most spectacular terrain on the Crest is reachable from the Idaho side, and Alaska Basin is how you get there.

At the mile-3 fork, turn left (south) and climb through old-growth forest into an open alpine basin at roughly 9,800 feet. Glaciers carved this cirque; the peaks of the Teton crest ring it on three sides.

Battleground Lake sits at the center — jade-green from glacial sediment, reflecting surrounding peaks on calm mornings. The late-July wildflower display here is extraordinary: Indian paintbrush, lupine, columbine, and Pedicularis groenlandica (elephant's head — a deep pink wildflower shaped exactly like its name, trunk and all). Moose in the lower willows. Marmots on every rock. Mountain goats on the upper ridges if you scan carefully.

From the basin, the trail climbs to Hurricane Pass at 10,372 feet. The approach involves what hikers call the Sheep Steps — a steep series of rock slabs requiring careful, confident scrambling. Not technical, but it earns its name. From the pass, you're looking directly into the South Fork of Cascade Canyon, the other side of the Tetons. If you've hiked Cascade Canyon from Jenny Lake, standing here and looking back is disorienting in the best possible way.

�� What most people miss: Sunset Lake — a quieter tarn a short walk east of Battleground Lake. The crowds (such as they are) concentrate at Battleground. Sunset Lake frequently has no one at it.

�� Permit note: Alaska Basin is in the Jedidiah Smith Wilderness — free self-issue permit at the trailhead for overnight camping. Cross Hurricane Pass into Grand Teton NP for an overnight and NPS backcountry permit rules apply. Day hiking across the pass is fine.

4. South Leigh Canyon — Where the Old-Growth Forest Still Stands

South Leigh Canyon is the west-side trail for people who have stopped needing to summit something to feel like the hike counted.

The canyon runs north of Driggs, parallel to Teton Canyon but quieter. The first thing you notice when you enter it is the trees. Old-growth Douglas fir — some 200 years old or more — stand in the lower canyon with a scale and stillness that younger forests in the valley don't have. The understory is sparse; the canopy too dense for much light to penetrate. Walking through these sections feels cathedral-like in a way that isn't a cliché.

South Leigh Creek runs alongside the trail the entire way. American dippers — small gray birds that live exclusively along fast-moving streams, diving into the water to walk along the bottom — work the creek constantly. They're one of the stranger and more charming birds in the American West, and this canyon is excellent habitat. Osprey fish overhead. Woodpeckers work the snags.

Around mile 2, the canyon opens briefly into a former beaver meadow. The dams have washed out but the flat, wet ground remains, and moose are frequently spotted here in morning and evening, feeding on the willows. Early-season hikers sometimes walk directly into moose without warning — be alert and make noise.

�� Come back in September: South Leigh Canyon's mixed forest turns gold and orange as the aspens peak, and because the canyon runs east-west, afternoon light comes directly in and makes the trees glow. This is one of the best fall color walks in the entire valley — and almost no one knows about it.

5. Moose Creek — The Trail the Guidebooks Forgot

There's a reason to name a trail Moose Creek, and it's that moose use it. The willows along the lower drainage hold moose reliably — morning hikes in July and August frequently produce sightings of cows with calves feeding in the creek, completely unbothered by a quiet passerby.

The trailhead sits north of Tetonia on a dirt road that's fine in dry conditions and properly bad when wet. GPS routing here is unreliable — download Gaia GPS offline maps before you leave and verify the approach. The first two miles cross private land under a Forest Service easement; stay on the trail.

Around mile 2, the canyon opens into a broad, flat-bottomed valley hidden entirely by the surrounding ridgelines until you're standing in it. Suddenly: a high meadow, peaks on three sides, wildflowers filling the foreground, and — almost certainly — no other people. Experienced hikers can gain the ridgeline above for a 180-degree view north past Tetonia to the Henry's Fork drainage.

�� Why this trail stays uncrowded: It doesn't go anywhere famous. No notable summit, no famous lake, no highlight reel photograph. What it offers instead is the quality of quietness that the American West used to provide more consistently — a place where you can spend a full day and see almost no one. That's increasingly rare and increasingly worth seeking out.

There's a pattern to all five of these trails: they require slightly more effort to find and access than east-side equivalents, and they return that effort with space, solitude, and the particular satisfaction of being somewhere people haven't completely figured out yet.

The Tetons are the same from both sides. What changes is the experience around the mountains — the quiet, the sense of scale, the feeling that the landscape is giving you something rather than processing you through it.

Spend a few days here, combine it with time in Grand Teton National Park for the lake walks and visitor center orientation, add a long day north to Yellowstone — and you'll leave with a relationship to these mountains that the east-side crowd rarely gets to have.

Is the Teton River difficult?

For most visitors, the answer is no.

The popular Upper Teton River between Driggs and Tetonia is slow-moving with gentle current and very little whitewater. It's ideal for:

This is the classic Teton River float and the section most locals recommend.

You'll paddle through winding channels with incredible views of the Tetons while weaving between willows and wetlands. This stretch offers some of the best opportunities to see moose standing in the river during July and August.

Rainey → Cache (Packsaddle)

Distance: About 4 miles

Float Time: 2 hours

Best For: Guests wanting fewer crowds

This stretch sees significantly fewer floaters while offering equally beautiful scenery. The river opens up a bit and feels more remote as it winds through ranch country.

South Bates → Cache

Distance: About 12 miles

Float Time: 6-8 hours

Best For: Full-day adventures

Bring lunch, plenty of water, and make a day of it. This float covers nearly the entire recreational section of the Upper Teton River.

Where to Rent Equipment

If you're visiting without your own paddleboard or kayak, several excellent local outfitters make the process incredibly easy.

The Park’s main highlights are just about an hour’s drive away from Teton Valley. To reach the official park entrances, you can drive over Teton Pass towards Jackson Hole. As you descend the pass, you have two options to get into the park. One route takes you directly north, winding along the base of the Tetons through Teton Village, which offers exciting activities like the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. While not officially inside the park, it feels like you’re already immersed in its beauty. Another route leads through Jackson Hole and then up to the north, reaching the same entrance. If time permits, consider taking one route up and the other back for a diverse experience.

Additionally, there is excellent access to the Tetons from this side of the range, just outside the park’s official boundaries. Teton Canyon, a beautiful location, is only a short 10-minute drive away

Yellowstone National Park

For Yellowstone, there are two convenient entrances accessible from Teton Valley.

South Entrance: You’ll head over Teton Pass to Jackson Hole and then travel through Grand Teton National Park (worth exploring on its own for a day or two) before reaching the actual South Entrance of Yellowstone. Along the way, you’ll come across several highlights, including Teton Pass, Jackson Hole, Teton Village, Grand Teton National Park, and Rockefeller Parkway.
West Entrance: Heading north from Teton Valley, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the Teton Mountain range to the east. The route takes you into the southeast corner of Montana and the town of West Yellowstone, with the Park entrance just outside of town. This drive is approximately 100 miles and takes about 2 hours, featuring highlights like Mesa Falls and Harriman State Park.

A recommended way to explore both parks in one day is to do a full loop, entering through one entrance and exiting through the other. It may be a long day, but it allows you to experience the best of the region.

Although there are various options for staying in the region while visiting the national parks, Teton Valley offers a good central location, making it a convenient base for your adventures. Keep in mind that the region is vast, so be prepared for some driving unless you choose to stay at a lodge within the parks themselves.
